Introduction:

Diphenylene oxide is a heterocyclic compounds with two benzene rings and one furan structure. Also known as dibenzofuran or biphenyl oxygen.It is one of the model compounds for the study of biodegradation of dioxin-like pollutants.It is a white crystall-like solid created from production of coal tar.

Preparation:

Diphenylene oxide is recovered from a wash oil fraction of coal tar that boils between 275 °C and 290 °C. Redistillation separates diphenylene oxide from acenaphthene, which boils at a lower temperature. Crystallization of the redistilled fraction then produces technically pure diphenylene oxide




Application:

Diphenylene oxide is used as an insecticide, in the production of PVC, industrial bleaching and incineration. Diphenylene oxide can also produce veterinary nitrate(Bayer 9015), For the treatment of cattle, sheep and other liver fluke disease.
